Teaching at the BIOTEC

Master's Programs

The application for the winter term 2017/18 is closed. Next application period: February-May 2018 for admissions in winter term 2018/19.

Congratulations to the iGEM Team!

The Biotechnology Center hosts three international Master's programs in English:

The programs Molecular Bioengineering, Nanobiophysics and Regenerative Biology and Medicine have been successfully (re)accredited on 3 February 2017! The accreditation first runs until 30 September 2018.

In joint association with the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven/Belgium, the BIOTEC also offers a joint-degree program in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in the framework of the Erasmus Mundus initiative by the European commission.

BIOMOD and iGEM competitions

BIOMOD is an annual biomolecular design competition organized by the Wyss Institute at the Harvard University (USA). More information.

Since 2012, teams of students of our master's programs Molecular Bioengineering and Nanobiophysics have been participating quite successfully.
In 2016, an interdisciplinary team of masters' students Molecular Bioengineering and Nanobiophysics was awarded with the gold medal for its project "I, nanobot". The project consisted of a micro-sized device capable of transport and deliver a cargo in a controlled manner. It was the result of linking a magnetic Dynabead(r), which allows the external control of movement with a variable magnetic field, to a vesicle for the transportation and delivery of the cargo. Targeted drug delivery and biosensoring are some possible applications that this device might have in the fields of medicine and molecular biology.

The International Genetically Engineered Machine competition (iGEM)  is the premiere undergraduate Synthetic Biology competition.  iGEM began in January of 2003 with a month-long course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. More information.

In 2017, 2015, 2010 and 2009, a team of Master Students joined together and participated in this competition. This year's team EncaBcillus It's a trap! won a gold medal and was nominated in 4 categories (best poster, best part, best part collection, best fundamental advanced project). The project aimed at introducing Peptidosomes as a new fundamental approach for generating and applying encapsulated bacteria. In 2015, the team won a bronze medal for its project SPACE-P (Structural Phage Assisted Continuous Evolution of Proteins). In 2009, the team won the silver medal for its project of the nano Factory.

Vocational Training: Laboratory Assistants

Since 2007, laboratory assistants have been receiving their on-the-job training in different research groups of the BIOTEC while doing the theoretical schooling at the vocational school in Radebeul. The vocational training takes 3.5 years. The next start for new apprentices will be September 2019.
