In
Network analysis of the South Florida Everglades graminoid marshes
and comparison with nearby cypress ecosystems
(Heymans et. al. 2002)
the authors have compiled a highly detailed network of carbon exchanges
within the ecosystem of the Everglades.
Below is the corresponding power graph, centered around five predators:
Raptors, Crocodiles, Pelican, Comorant, and Dolphin.
All these predators eat fish such as Parrotfish and Needlefish (top right corner in redish colors),
but the Dolphin shares with Pelicans and Comorans (two birds) a particular taste for
sardines, and 'bay anchovies' (top left corner).
Whereas Raptors and Crocodiles prefer Catfish and Mullet ;-)
The 'output' corresponds to the output of carbon from the ecological system studied,
it is thus not a species but represent the outside of the system as a carbon sink.
There is also an 'input' node that represents the carbon source from the outside world.
