Florida Food Chain Network

Florida Food Chain Network

In Network analysis of the South Florida Everglades graminoid marshes and comparison with nearby cypress ecosystems (Heymans et. al. 2002) the authors have compiled a highly detailed network of carbon exchanges within the ecosystem of the Everglades. Below is the corresponding power graph, centered around five predators: Raptors, Crocodiles, Pelican, Comorant, and Dolphin. All these predators eat fish such as Parrotfish and Needlefish (top right corner in redish colors), but the Dolphin shares with Pelicans and Comorans (two birds) a particular taste for sardines, and 'bay anchovies' (top left corner). Whereas Raptors and Crocodiles prefer Catfish and Mullet ;-)
The 'output' corresponds to the output of carbon from the ecological system studied, it is thus not a species but represent the outside of the system as a carbon sink. There is also an 'input' node that represents the carbon source from the outside world.
