At DFG-Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden the Chair of Molecular and Cellular Immunology / Focus Immune Regulation (Prof. Dr. Karsten Kretschmer) offers a position as

PhD student (E 13 TV-L)

starting September 1st 2014 which entail 50 % to 65 % of the fulltime weekly hours. We initially offer a contract for three years. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). The research interest of our group focuses on molecular and cellular pathways that govern the generation, lifestyle and function of Foxp3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells, which play an essential role in maintaining immune homeostasis in mice and men. A particularly striking example of Foxp3+ Treg cell function that restrains destructive tissue-specific autoimmunity is our recent observation that acute Treg cell ablation in the NOD mouse model of human type 1 diabetes unleashes overt autoimmune diabetes within days (Petzold et al., J Diabetes Res 2013). Conversely, Treg cells represent exciting gain-of-function targets in clinical settings of unwanted immune responses, such as autoimmunity, allergies and transplant rejection.

Position and Requirements

The PhD position we offer is part of a project in which we aim to investigate the molecular and epigenetic mechanisms underlying the development of Foxp3+ Treg cell sublineages. In this context, a particular focus is placed on exploring the possibility that different Treg cell subphenotypes exert specialized effector functions in the control of unwanted immunity, such as organ-specific autoimmunity (webpage:  http://www.crt-dresden.de/research/crtdcore-groups/kretschmer.html).
We aim at attracting the best talent in the respective research fields and expect the following: an outstanding masters university degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Science or related field of science; experience in  immunology, flow cytometry, gene-targeted and autoimmune mouse models, cell culture and molecular/biochemical methods; ability to work
in an international team is essential; inter- and multidisciplinary thinking; high motivation; an integrative and cooperative personality with excellent communication and social skills; fluency in English – written and oral.
