Chronic Massively Parallel Recording of Single Units in the Rodent Brain Using Electrochemically-Roughened Carbon-Nanotube-Coated Tetrodes

Chronic massively parallel recordings in superficial areas of large mammals such as humans and non-human primates have been feasible for almost a decade, due to the advent of Utah arrays and similar multiwire arrays. However, in smaller brains and in deep-seated areas, such approaches have not been successful. We use a new approach: electrochemically-roughened, carbon-nanotube-coated, thin twisted tetrodes. We conduct massively parallel recording of tens of single units per tetrode, for months, with isolated units stable for several weeks. This technique opens up new possibilities in rodent neurophysiology relating to development, learning, pathological processes, and aging.
